How the Exotec Next Generation Skypod system works
The Exotec Skypod system combines the advantages of high-density storage rack with autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to deliver a unique container-agnostic goods-to-person solution for automated storage and order fulfillment. Goods can be stored in a variety of different containers, including bins, cardboard boxes, customer totes or parcels, which are inducted into the system through an Exchanger. From there, the mobile robots retrieve containers and transport them across the warehouse floor and into racking locations for storage
When a product needs to be retrieved to fulfill an order, the robots can access and retrieve the item from the racking location in under two minutes. The system’s workstations are equipped with ramps that allow Skypod robots to ergonomically present bins and trays to the operator. With integrated screens and scanners, the workstations support order picking, replenishment and inventory checks, enabling operators to process up to 600 containers per hour. Optional accessories such as Pick to Light and additional scanners can be added to further enhance accuracy. The Skypod system operates efficiently in both chilled and ambient environments.
The system natively supports value-added logistics features without external equipment or complex subsystems. This simplifies warehouse flow and reduces system footprint by minimizing conveyors, sorters, external storage, and packing stations. Specifically, the Next Gen Skypod supports:
- Integrated Buffering: Next-Gen Skypod buffers orders within the system. After preparation at the Workstation, completed or semi-completed orders are automatically stored until ready for outbound or further consolidation, reducing staging areas and external buffers.
- Perfect Sequencing: Next-Gen Skypod ensures strict outbound sequencing using robots and the Exchanger. Orders are grouped and arranged before being routed to outbound, enabling precise loading based on delivery routes or store planograms without external sorting.
- Pick-and-Pack: Packing is seamlessly integrated with picking. Operators pick directly into fulfillment containers, eliminating manual packing. This works well with right-size packaging solutions, cutting last-mile costs.
The entire system is managed by the Deepsky®, Exotec’s proprietary warehouse execution system (WES), which seamlessly integrates with your warehouse management system (WMS). This software also enables Skypod robots to prioritize urgent orders, ensuring they are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
