Indianapolis, IN – On December 13, employees from Bastian Material Handling attended the 15th Annual Governor's Luncheon for Scouting held at Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis. The Bastian Solutions employees enjoyed the luncheon, hosted by Boy Scouts of the Crossroads of America Council, and contributed to the record-breaking $1,089,701 raised to benefit Scouting and Scout programs in Central Indiana.
This year's luncheon also introduced the Governor Mitch Daniels' Scout Camp Fund. With the establishment of the program, Scouts from underserved areas of the state will receive the opportunity to attend Scout camp at a significantly reduced cost.
"The Boy Scouts play an important role in developing future male leaders for business, military, NASA, and the government," said Bill Bastian II, President of Bastian Solutions. "Because of the organization's ability to develop such leaders, it is important to Bastian Solutions to support the organization, but more importantly the youth involved."
In early December, Bastian Robotics in St. Louis hosted a local Boy Scout troop; seventeen Scouts, siblings, and parents toured the facility and participated in a question and answer session with Bastian Solutions engineers.
During the tour, the Scouts were able to see roughly a dozen industrial robots performing a variety of tasks, including palletizing and de-palletizing, machine tending, and a very sophisticated, dual robot that picks from a racking system. Since many of the Scouts were involved in Lego© Mindstorm activities and a local FIRST© Robotics competition, they had more than a casual interest in robotics. Thus, following the tour much time was spent discussing an educational path toward a career in robot integration and mechatronics.
"The Scouts really impressed us with their knowledge and keen interest in robotics," said Brian Etter, a field sales engineer at Bastian Robotics. "One Scout even asked how he could get one of our robots for Christmas!"
