Understanding what information to have on hand when ordering replacement conveyor rollers can remove a lot of guess work, reducing the risk of ordering incorrect rollers and not having the correct parts available when equipment breaks down.  Below are a few basic items to consider when ordering replacement conveyor rollers.

Do: Obtain a make, model and serial #.

If possible, get the make, model and serial number of the roller you need and the corresponding conveyor.  If the conveyor is custom, having the serial number will identify the special components that would be needed.  For instance a 1.9” diameter roller can be a belt return roller that mounts with die cast brackets (Hytrol models TA, TL, TR), or it can be mounted between channels of live roller conveyors.  In each situation, it will have a different part number.

Do: Provide a description of where the roller is used.

There are terms such as “snub roller”, which depending on the model of conveyor, may have a different part number based on where the roller is in the conveyor assembly.  A 2.5” diameter snub roller in an underside take-up assembly has a different part number than a 2.5” diameter snub roller used with an 8” diameter end drive pulley.

Don’t: Order by roller diameter and “roller length”.

This can often result in the wrong part being ordered.  There are multiple roller part numbers for rollers in the approximate 2” diameter range. Some part numbers can be used in place of one another, but we want to replace existing rollers with rollers of the same or greater specification.  For instance, a special bearing or thicker gauge material may be used in the construction of the roller. These features can be easily overlooked when ordering by length and width.

Don’t: Round your measurements.

A 2” diameter x 12 gauge gravity conveyor roller is often mistaken for a 1.9” diameter roller.  Using precision measurement tools, such as a pair of calipers, to measure roller diameter can easily prevent this common mistake. Ordering replacement rollers is an easy process when you can provide the above information.
