6 Reasons Why You Need a Site Manager on your Project

All projects, large and small, have many moving parts that need to come together in time to meet your deadline. The project doesn’t end once the system is designed and the hardware is ordered; it is only beginning. When equipment from multiple vendors is coming in from all over the country, and installers are due to start in a week, you want a key person who knows your system inside and out, making sure it all goes smoothly - a Site Manager.
They keep constant contact with the project team, updating the team on how the site is coming along, and answering any questions or concerns the customer might have. They are there from start to finish to resolve any issues that may come up in a timely manner, making sure the project goes as planned. Here are the top 6 reasons why you should have a site manager on your next project:
1. Having someone on site who understands the system
Site managers have access to all documents pertaining to the project and know how the system was designed to function. They know if any aspect is missing, needs to be added or changed.
Often, the site manager can bring up an issue that the project engineer may not have seen. Then, they can get the conversation started on how to get the system running as expected.
2. Managing the work and progress of installs
Managing install is critical to a project because it keeps the install on schedule. The site manager will be able to keep install crews on schedule. and be sure that items are being installed correctly- For example; the location, orientation, and height, etc. are all easily corrected during install rather than after.
3. Customer training on how to properly use the new system
If you are new to automation, training is the top reason why you want a site manger on your project. Site managers coach the operations team on the new system, including maintenance – helping you to maximize safety and uptime, because the team knows the ‘do’s and don’t’s’ of the system to ensure it is functioning properly.
4. Point of contact for logistics
Site managers oversee deliveries, installs and site visits. They will make sure deliveries are received and in good condition This ensures same-day management of issues, so that installation schedules will not be affected.
Throughout the project, it is likely that the site will have visitors. Site managers should join in on the tour visit and answer any questions the visitors may have.
5. Immediate troubleshooting
This is beneficial after installation and commissioning, where you might discover a variety of different issues that could be mechanical, electrical, controls or software related. The site manager can be the first to evaluate the issue and find the root cause of the problem – which means that appropriate departments are notified, parts are ordered, and minor problems are resolved quickly.
6. Lead safety person
